“I’m percolating.” That’s what I say when I’m figuring out ideas for my stories. I can percolate for a few hours or for many months. But when it’s time to pour, that’s when the writing begins. Born in Taiwan, I immigrated to America at five years old. Taiwan is a beautiful country with vibrant cities, lush country sides, and the warmest of people. I haven’t returned as much as I’d like. One of my dreams is to travel extensively across the island someday. I’ve read many terrific children’s books but one that I hold dear is actually wordless. ZOOM by Istvan Banyai taught me to see from unexpected perspectives. Each page turn revealed scenes where nothing is quite what it seems. Otocinclus are peaceful little catfish that inhabit my aquarium. They’re busy algae eaters that keep my tank tidy, making them my trusty cleanup crew. It’s fascinating to see the roles creatures play in keeping balance within an ecosystem. Plants give us so much: oxygen, food, shelter, and nourishment for our souls. Without plants, life on Earth would be impossible. So, let’s show our appreciation like Leif does in LEIF’S GIFT by loving, cherishing, and even hugging a plant. What can I say about cookies? They’re the ultimate treat! They can be gooey or crispy, or even a combo of both. And you don’t need a spoon or fork to eat one. So, if you happen to enjoy baking, oatmeal cookies are my personal favorite. Libraries are sanctuaries of knowledge. I’m fortunate to live near the NYPL, which has one of the finest children’s book collections. You just might find me there, either in a writing session or browsing the shelves, often leaving with a bagful of treasures. The simple circle, in my opinion, is the best of all shapes. It has no beginning or end, and symbolizes unity, eternity, and harmony. Think of all the wonderful circles in our lives like the sun, the moon, hula hoops, beach balls, and of course, cookies. As a night owl, I often stay up past a reasonable bedtime. Living in a bustling city, I appreciate the stillness that night brings, especially when a new idea needs exploring. So, for the sake of creativity, I give myself permission.
